Conservatives Against Fox Hunting was shocked when cufflinks and other accessories bearing the words “I love hare coursing” was brought to our attention. They were being sold by a company called Sven Licht Manufactury of Berlin, and were being advertised on Amazon’s UK and International websites.

Hares populations have seriously declined by approximately 80 percent, in the United Kingdom over the last century.

Hare Coursing( involves chasing a hare with two large dog- usually greyhounds or lurchers for’sport’) has been banned in England and Wales under the protective Hunting Act 2004 which is under the threat of repeal. 85 percent of the population say hare coursing should remain illegal.

Sadly the practice continues in the Republic of Ireland and some other parts of the world

In a joint letter with Humane Society International UK and The Hare Preservation Trust we immediately wrote to the Berlin company highlighting the cruelty of hare coursing, and pointing out that the items appeared to support an activity which is illegal in many of the jurisdictions in which they were being offered for sale. We copied the letter to Amazon urging them to withdraw the items from their portfolio.

Amazon’s UK and International teams wrote back a few days later and said that the items were no longer on their websites.

We understand that The Berlin manufacturer of the accessories was inundated with letters and calls protesting against the items, and that the company made a decision to withdraw them from sale

We are pleased to see that a motion to ban hare coursing in Ireland is being prepared by Members of the Irish Parliament. We hope thast this cruel activity is banned soon. There is no justification for hare coursing at all and it causes unecessary suffering to vulnerable hares.
