Sir Roger Gale MP, the Chairman of Conservative Animal Welfare and the Founder of Blue Fox call on the Government to continue to fund the National Wildlife Crime Unit
The National Wildlife Crime Unit (NWCU) is one of the world’s leading policing teams tackling wildlife crime. The Unit is only funded until March 2016.
Roger Gale MP commented, “Wildlife crime is now recognised as a serious issue and the National Wildlife Crime Unit is equally recognised as one of the world’s leading organisations engaged in the fight against both domestic wildlife crimes and international and organised crimes involving wildlife generally and endangered species in particular. The fight against wildlife crime requires the co-ordination of the constabulary and Government agencies both nationally and internationally and the NWCU is well placed to offer this. Given at a time of austerity continued funding for NWCU must be a Government imperative”.
Lorraine Platt, Founder of Blue Fox said “The unit is vital in the fight against domestic wildlife crime, international organised crime and coordinates British police forces and Government agencies such as the UK Border Force. The unit is involved in stopping the trade in endangered species, reptile smuggling, the illegal ivory trade, badger baiting, poaching, bird-related offences and the trade in dangerous wild animals.”
The Environmental Audit Committee report into the enforcement of wildlife crime, has called for the continued funding of the unit along with Conservative MPs.
We call on the Government to continue funding for the NWCU.
